Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization

Is your business, legal or otherwise, one that would do better if it were ranked locally in the search engines? You will find below three powerful suggestions that you can implement immediately that will help you make your way to the top.

The best tip you can get local SEO would be to get into your customer’s shoes and think like them. If you want to understand how your customers search online you need to learn how they think. So, the idea is that you need to try and figure out what a customer/searcher would use to find the type of products you are selling or your site. We were just working on a local attorney site not too long ago and spent some time looking at local searches – with a mind and eye towards the particular verbiage that someone in the area was likely to use to find these local attorneys.  Since they were in the county seat, it was a foregone conclusion that we would want to rank them for that particular town, but how to rank them for other localities? By county, by town, by local community name (which sometimes can differ greatly from what your maps show)?

Regional lingo can make a huge difference in the search terms at times. There’s a local place outside of Raleigh known as “Cleveland.”  While there actually IS a Cleveland NC, around here our area is referred to as Cleveland and so we rank for it – even though it isn’t necessarily a big traffic getter, for thoroughness, we rank it.  It is also next to another area called 4042 – and of course, you guessed it – it’s not on a map, but it IS locally known and searched – so we ranked that one as well.  It really pays to know the area you’re working with and in.  Think like your customers and you’ll never go wrong.  If you are looking for a great local company in the Raleigh NC area,  look for ScreamingBeagle.co for your Raleigh SEO needs.  They handle a variety of customers and tend to keep it small and cozy – not a major “We have hundreds of clients” type player.  Just results, no mass marketing.

If you try to list your business many times to a local directory, you’ll find that they frown on that practice. So keeping this rule in mind, you should try to have different landing pages for different locations. Even though you’re not allowed to have more than one local listing, you definitely can have more than one location for your business. What you would do is merely point people to the particular site page that has all the locations for your business. Don’t send people from the listings directly to your site, send them to different landing pages.

Last but not the least; make sure you have your complete mailing address mentioned all over your site, on every page. This is a courtesy for your visitors, and they’ll be able to see where you are without navigating away. There are more things involved with local SEO than this, so be sure to learn about them. All in all, local SEO is here to stay and it will just grow with time. You need to make sure you are using it to its fullest potential now, before things get rough.
