Celebrex

Celebrex, a widely prescribed pain reliever used to treat Arthritis, has been in the spotlight recently due to its link to dangerous cardiovascular side effects. In current years Celebrex has been used as an alternative to other pain relievers because it is gentler on the stomach, but recent cancer-related clinical studies have shown that patients who take this medication are at an increased risk for strokes and heart attacks. The outcome of a study conducted on 2,000 patients taking varying dosages of Celebrex resulted in shocking results which included heart attacks, strokes, and even death among fifteen of the patients.

The drug, which is manufactured by Pfizer, has been on the market since late 1998 when it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Since its approval by the FDA, Celebrex has been used by approximately 27 million people in the United States to treat pain from arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe menstrual pain. This drug is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (Cox-2 inhibitor), similar to the prescription drugs Vioxx and Bextra which have also been associated with dangerous and fatal side effects.

The following is a list of some of the more serious side effects associated with the pain reliever prescription drug Celebrex. If you or a loved one have taken Celebrex and experienced any of the following side effects, you should seek medical attention right away"

  • Blackened stool
  • Chest pain
  • Headaches
  • Hypertension/high blood pressure
  • Jaundice
  • Kidney failure or problems
  • Stomach aches
  • Vomit with blood

If you have any of the above listed side effects, you may be at risk for a more serious medical problem, such as heart attack, stroke, or heart failure. You should discuss any side effects with your physician and decide upon another course of action to relieve your serious pain.

Although no plans have been made to pull Celebrex from the market, Pfizer has decided to pull all Celebrex advertising, including TV and newspaper ads. The drug manufacturer spent over $70 million dollars in 2004 on advertising Celebrex, which has in turn aided in the sales of over 2 billion dollars of the medication.
