NuvaRing Birth Control
NuvaRing is a birth control product that is worn inside the vagina and releases synthetic hormones similar to those found in birth control pills. It has been linked to dangerous and sometimes fatal side effects. By 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had received at least 300 reports of adverse events linked to the drug. NuvaRing use has been blamed for the deaths of several healthy, young women. At least 12 deaths have been linked to NuvaRing.
Third Generation Birth Control
Like most birth control pills, NuvaRing contains a combination birth control drug. It releases synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone (progestin). The progestin in NuvaRing is called etonogestrel. Etonogestrel is one of the progestins used in "third generation" contraceptives.
Third generation birth control drugs are controversial because they are known to cause blood clots. Public Citizen, a watchdog group, has petitioned the FDA to ban the drugs.
Etonogestrel is a metabolite of desogestrel. In 1995 the FDA admitted that products containing desogestrel doubled the risk of developing venous blood clots, but it went on to approve NuvaRing in 2001.
NuvaRing Dangers
The biggest danger is the risk of forming blood clots. NuvaRing has been linked to blood clots in women who are young, healthy, and not otherwise at risk for them. Consequences of using NuvaRing can include:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - blood clot in the leg
- Pulmonary embolism (PE) - blood clot in the lung
- Stroke
- Heart attack
- Amputation
- Brain injury
- Gall bladder disease
- Liver tumors
- Death
Other NuvaRing Side Effects
NuvaRing is a flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina and stays in place for a week. It is used for three out of every four weeks. NuvaRing can have the same side effects of other combination contraceptives and device-related side effects:
- Vaginal infection
- Vaginal irritation
- Vaginal discharge
- Headaches
- Respiratory infections
- Weight gain
- Nausea
